Historical Timeline (2020- )

Established in October 2020, Bosque Film Society is a non-profit organization focused on promoting film appreciation, education and production in Bosque County, Texas, while serving as the “Friends of The Cliftex Theatre,” the longest continuously-operating movie theater in Texas.

2020

AUGUST

  • The Cliftex Theatre goes up for sale by owner Rich Douglas after potential buyers defaulted
  • Brett Voss calls Matt Wallace asking him if he would be interested in becoming a partner in forming a management group to own and operate The Cliftex Theatre
  • Brett Voss invites diverse selection of candidates from across Bosque County to meeting about forming a “management group”
  • With potential management group established, outline for business plan to operate The Cliftex developed, Brett Voss writes the plan
  • Following a private business plan presentation with potential underwriters, Brett & Simone Voss secure financial backing to buy The Cliftex, underwriters make offer to buy The Cliftex

SEPTEMBER

  • Richard & Megan Majors named new owners of The Cliftex Theatre
  • Encouraged by former Cliftex owners Phyllis Gamble and Mechelle Slaughter, Brett Voss calls “management group” together to discuss the possibility of forming a film society to offer support to The Cliftex and its new owners
  • Brett Voss meets with Richard Major to discuss forming the Bosque Film Society as a non-profit organization focused on promoting film appreciation, education and production in Bosque County, Texas, while serving as the “Friends of The Cliftex Theatre,” the longest continuously-operating movie theater in Texas. Voss and Major reached an agreement that would make The Cliftex Theatre the official home base for the Bosque Film Society.

OCTOBER

  • Bosque Film Society established, an 11-member board is formed with founding officers elected: President Brett Voss, Vice President Angela Smith, Secretary Nathan Diebenow, Treasurer Miriam Wallace, Historian Bryan Davis and Filmmakers-In-Residence William Godby and Matt Wallace. Original founding board members also included Simone Voss and Bill Calhoon as well as new owners Richard and Megan Majors. Former Cliftex owner Leon Smith named honorary board member before he passed away on Oct. 27, 2020.

NOVEMBER

  • Bosque Film Society holds first monthly board meeting, discussing plans and goals for 2021, which includes holding Arthouse or Film Appreciation Nights, and plans for its first Christmas Party in The Cliftex Theatre.
  • Richard Major revises initial plans to re-open The Cliftex Theatre in November due to minor renovations needed, tentatively planning to re-open in December.
  • Board also discusses plans for a membership drive, membership fees, possible benefits and “perks” of becoming a member. With The Cliftex Theatre uncertain of its re-opening date, board plans to revisit membership topic in March 2021.
  • Board discusses plans to establish social media and website presences with Brett Voss handling all social media, while Voss and Matt Wallace will partner to design and populate a dedicated website.

DECEMBER

  • Bosque Film Society hosts first Christmas Party featuring “It’s A Wonderful Life” (1946) with introduction presented by Bryan Davis on Dec. 8
  • After another postponement, Richard Major announces plans to re-open The Cliftex Theatre in late December featuring “News of the World” (2020) starring Tom Hanks. Interesting note: In the film, Hanks is shown reading a copy of The Clifton Record to a group of listeners in 1870. Fun Fact: The Clifton Record was not first published until 1895.

2021

JANUARY

  • Bosque Film Society board votes to hold Film Appreciation Nights six times during 2021, holding them every other month following monthly board meetings beginning in February. Selected board members agreed to select a film and deliver an introductory presentation prior to the film.

FEBRUARY

  • Bosque Film Society holds its first Film Appreciation Night at The Cliftex Theatre for board members and their personal guests featuring “The Artist” (2011) with introduction presented by Nathan Diebenow on Feb. 9.

MARCH

  • Bosque Film Society holds board workshop to discuss website design

APRIL

  • Board president Brett Voss announces plans for a press release making the establishment of the Bosque Film Society official publicly
  • Bosque Film Society holds its bi-monthly Film Appreciation Night at The Cliftex Theatre for board members and their personal guests featuring William Wyler’s “The Best Years of Our Lives” (1946) with introduction presented by William Godby

MAY

  • Bosque Film Society nominates Clifton High School graduate and working actor Samuel French nominated as a possible honorary board member. At present, Samuel has a role in Martin Scorsese’s next film based on David Grann’s best-selling book, “Killers of the Flower Moon” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeDiro, which takes place in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts a string of brutal murders of Osage Nation Native Americans, which came to be known as the Reign of Terror. Samuel plays the role of an FBI agent under the direction of the agent-in-charge played by Jesse Plemons.

JUNE

  • Bosque Film Society holds its bi-monthly Film Appreciation Night at The Cliftex Theatre for board members and their personal guests featuring “Harold & Maude” (1971) with introduction presented by Bryan Davis

JULY

  • Bosque Film Society votes to support and promote the free outdoor film screenings at the John A. Lomax Amphitheater in Meridian.

AUGUST

  • Bosque Film Society officially launches its website at: BosqueFilm.com, and with it, the society opens its “charter membership drive.”
  • As its initial way of financially supporting The Cliftex Theatre, the Bosque Film Society votes to begin playing rental fees for its monthly meetings and film appreciation nights held at The Cliftex. Previously, Richard Major had donated the use of the theatre to the BFS.
  • Bosque Film Society holds its bi-monthly Film Appreciation Night at The Cliftex Theatre for board members and their personal guests featuring “Ishtar” (1987) with introduction presented by Matt & Miriam Wallace.

SEPTEMBER

  • Bosque Film Society votes to cancel its planned bi-monthly Film Appreciation Night at The Cliftex Theatre for board members and their personal guests featuring Nicolas Roeg’s “Don’t Look Now” (1973) with introduction presented by Brett & Simone Voss in favor of hosting its first free-to-the-public film festival “Halloween Free Film Fest.”
  • At the suggestion of Matt Wallace, the Bosque Film Society begins planning to shoot its first short film, a horror-thriller film to be shown in conjunction with the Halloween Free Film Fest, as an exercise to expose board members to the process of filmmaking. Brett Voss serves as writer, co-director and co-producer, Matt Wallace serves as cinematographer, editor, co-director and co-producer, while all board members were involved in both acting and serving as crew.

OCTOBER

  • Bosque Film Society participates in Clifton’s 20th Annual Fall Fest with a booth in front of The Cliftex Theatre featuring its “Charter Membership Drive.”
  • After asking all board members to submit their favorite scene for a horror-thriller film, Brett Voss holds a creative roundtable meeting to explore script ideas for the BFS short film project. Following the meeting, Brett & Simone Voss developed the story together, and Brett wrote the screenplay. After read-throughs and production planning, the crew shot the film in three days at five different locations.
  • Bosque Film Society hosts its free-to-the-public 2021 Halloween Free Film Fest featuring six films in four days including “The Goonies” (1985), “ET: The Extra-Terrestrial” (1982), “Frankenstein” (1931), “Beetlejuice” (1988), “Casper” (1995) and “Monster House” (2006). Free seating was on a first-come, first-serve basis until capacity was reached, and the theatre concession stand was open for purchases.

NOVEMBER

  • Bosque Film Society votes to explore holding a Fred Ward Tribute event in 2022, focusing on the little-known fact of Freddie Joe Ward’s Bosque County connection as a graduate of Valley Mills High School. Tentative plans were made to host a free-to-the-public double feature presenting “Tremors” (1990) and “The Right Stuff” (1983) while inviting Ward to attend as the special guest or possibly secure a video greeting to present on the big screen. A possible date discussed was Dec. 30, which would be his 80th birthday.

DECEMBER

  • Bosque Film Society membership surpassed 100 members with goal set at 150 due to the seating capacity of The Cliftex Theatre.
  • Bosque Film Society holds its 2nd Annual Christmas Party and Charter Member “Meet & Greet” at The Cliftex Theatre for its new “charter members” featuring “Scrooged” (1988) with introduction presented by Angela Smith. The society provided refreshments for its members for the first time, while board members and charter members alike contributed various Christmas dishes and treats. Since BFS events are private for members-only, adult beverages are served, BYOB is allowed, and the theatre concession stand is open for purchases.
  • Trailer for Bosque Film Society-produced short film “Gal Manns Skrik: Mad Man’s Scream” was presented at the “Meet & Greet”
  • Prior to the movie presentation, charter members voted to selected the movies for the 2022 Film Appreciation Night Series selecting eight films for our 2022 monthly schedule. Following the voting, the society initiated the annual tradition of drawing for “Christmas gifts,” presenting lucky members with gift certificates for $10 at concessions, $20 for four (4) movie tickets, and $150 for a theatre rental.
  • Bosque Film Society hosts the free-to-the-public 2021 Christmas Double Feature at The Cliftex Theatre presenting “Polar Express” (2004) and “Elf” (2003) with singer-pianist Miriam “Muther Mirm” Wallace leading Christmas carols prior to the film and presenting all guests with a custom-designed, homemade Christmas cookie.

2022

JANUARY

  • Bosque Film Society holds its monthly board meeting by Zoom out of precaution to the pandemic. To fill the two open board seats to fill, the board unanimously approved Kaye Callaway of Clifton and Phillip Vasquez of Hico.
  • Society purchased a new dedicated wireless microphone system for The Cliftex Theatre with plans to have in before the February 2022 meeting.
  • Board approves sponsoring two film screenings of the Meridian Parks & Recreation Department’s free outdoor movie events in 2022 with sponsorship amounts to $200 for each film.

FEBRUARY

  • Bosque Film Society plans its next four-day free film festival originally scheduled for March 2022 with a theme featuring westerns starting John Wayne and Clint Eastwood on July 28-31.
  • The board approves adding five Arthouse Film Nights to the 2022 members-only presentations. The films selected include Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times” (March 8), Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” (May 10), Ingmar Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal” (July 12), Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove” (Sept. 13), and Francois Truffaut’s “Day For Night” (Nov. 8).
  • The Society held its bi-monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) as presented by Bryan Davis.

MARCH

  • Bosque Film Society announces selection of six films to be shown over four days at the first annual Wild Western Weekend Free Film Festival July 28-31, featuring three John Wayne movies and three Clint Eastwood movies, including “Rio Bravo,” “The Outlaw Josey Wales,” “Unforgiven,” “The Cowboys,” “The Shootist” and “Paint Your Wagon.”
  • Board president Brett Voss encourages the board members to convert their spoken film presentations into written articles so we can have regular content on the BFS’s website and social media, publishing film-related content in order to reach new members and maintain the Society’s relevance.
  • Brett Voss announces that he and Will Godby have been invited Allen Public Library to give a presentation for “On Stage at APL” entitled “Ballad Hunters and Song Catchers” on April 7 in Allen, Texas.
  • The Society held its first members-only Arthouse Film Night featuring “Modern Times” (1936) as presented by William Godby.

APRIL

  • At the Bosque Film Society’s monthly board meeting April 12, Brett Voss and Matt Wallace announce the completion of the BFS’s first short film production “Gal Manns Skrik: Mad Man’s Scream.” Wallace discussed the editing process for the 15-minute film, including music, sound effects, and color-correcting as well as the collaboration with Voss and Will Godby as producers. The board approves plans to enter the production in film festivals.
  • The Society held its bi-monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Rear Window” (1954) as presented by Kaye Callaway.

MAY

  • Bosque Film Society hosts its first Cinco de Mayo Celebration free double feature presenting “La Bamba” and “Selena,” sponsored by Bryan Davis with Clifton High School teacher Fatima Cathcart’s third-year Spanish class introducing the films.
  • The Society held its bi-monthly members-only Arthouse Film Night featuring “Citizen Kane” (1941) as presented by Philip Vasquez.

JUNE

  • Bosque Film Society announces that “Gal Manns Skirk: Mad Man’s Scream” received its first nomination in several categories in the Cowpoke Intn’l Film Festival in Electra, Texas: Best Short, Best Horror/Thriller, Best Suspense, Best Actor (Will Godby), Best Director (B. Voss & Matt Wallace). It was selected as Best Horror Short in Utrecht, The Netherlands and the Texas Short Film Festival in San Antonio, Texas, July 30.
  • The Society held its bi-monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid” (1969) as presented by Miriam Wallace.

JULY

  • Bosque Film Society formally approves partnership with the Billy The Kid Film Festival held in Hico, Texas on the first weekend of November, and agrees to host a film showcase two weeks after the festival at The Cliftex Theatre.
  • Bosque Film Society approves plans to hold a free film double feature in tribute to the late actor Fred Ward, a former resident of Valley Mills, Texas featuring “Tremors” and “The Right Stuff” on Tuesday, Dec. 27.
  • The Society held its bi-monthly members-only Arthouse Film Night featuring “The Seventh Seal” (1957) as presented by Nathan Diebenow.

AUGUST

  • Bosque Film Society Bosque Film Society announces plans to produce a documentary short film on Fred Ward, written and directed by Bryan Davis and Brett Voss, edited by William Godby, produced by Godby and Voss.
  • The Society held its bi-monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “All That Jazz” (1979) as presented by Angela Smith.

SEPTEMBER

  • Bosque Film Society approves plans to sponsor the Billy the Kid Film Festival’s award-winning film presentations at The CLIFTEX in the afternoon on Sunday, Nov. 20.
  • Bosque Film Society votes to co-sponsor a special Halloween film event with The Cliftex featuring the award-winning Midway High School orchestra’s band performing live musical accompaniment to the classic silent film “Nosferatu” (1922) on Friday, October 28.
  • The Society held its bi-monthly members-only Arthouse Film Night featuring “Dr. Strangelove” (1964) as presented by Matt Wallace.

OCTOBER

  • Bosque Film Society participates in Clifton’s 28th Annual Trick of Treat with Main Street passing out candy to children celebrating Halloween in front of The Cliftex Theatre.
  • Beginning in 2023, the BFS board approved serving beer, wine and assorted finger foods for its members-only monthly Film Appreciation Night Series at no charge to its members during its private film presentations.
  • The Society held its bi-monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Out of Africa” (1985) as presented by Simone Voss.

NOVEMBER

  • Bosque Film Society announces plans for the Bosque Film Society’s first Best of the Fest Showcase held in partnership with the 5th Annual Billy The Kid Film Festival featuring Red Carpet special guest Ty Murray, nine-time world championships in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and his award-winning film “Un-Tyed: Building Rosie” with his wife Paige and filmmaker Luke Linderman.
  • The Society held its bi-monthly members-only Arthouse Film Night featuring “Day for Night” (1973) as presented by Brett Voss.

DECEMBER

  • Bosque Film Society membership surpasses 125 members with goal set at 150 due to the seating capacity of The Cliftex Theatre.
  • Bosque Film Society holds its 3rd Annual Christmas Party at The Cliftex Theatre for members only featuring “White Christmas” (1954) with introduction presented by Bryan Davis. The society provided refreshments for its members, while board members and members alike contributed various Christmas dishes and treats. Since BFS events are private for members-only, adult beverages are served, BYOB is allowed, and the theatre concession stand is open for purchases.
  • Prior to the movie presentation, charter members selected the movies for the 2023 Film Appreciation Night Series by participating in live voting on 225 nominated films, narrowing the field down to 12 films for our 2023 monthly schedule using a real-time voting system projected on the silver screen. The categories included selections from nine decades, a silent film, a Halloween feature and a Christmas movie. Following the voting, the society initiated the annual tradition of drawing for “Christmas gifts,” presenting lucky members with gift certificates for $10 at concessions, $20 for four (4) movie tickets, and $150 for a theatre rental.
  • Bosque Film Society hosts the first Fred Ward Memorial Tribute by offering a free-to-the-public double feature presenting two of his most iconic movies, the 1989 cult monster flick “Tremors” followed by the 1983 Oscar-winning drama detailing the early years of the United States space program, “The Right Stuff” featuring an all-star cast.

  • Bosque Film Society discusses the possibility of planning an Elvis Presley-themed free film event in the future in light of the popularity of Baz Luhrmann’s biographical musical drama film “Elvis” (2022).
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Singing In the Rain” (1952) as presented by Angela Smith.

MARCH

  • Bosque Film Society approves holding the first Tour de Norway Viking Film Festival in conjunction with the Clifton Chamber of Commerce’s annual Tour de Norway cycling event.
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “North By Northwest” (1959) as presented by William Godby.

APRIL

  • Bosque Film Society begins discussions on hosting a special event to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Norwegian immigration to America in 2025, in conjunction with Clifton being identified as the “Norwegian Capital of Texas.”
  • Sponsored by Matt and Miriam Wallace with Mustang International, the Bosque Film Society hosted a special Tuesday Night at the Movies with a free-to-the-public presentation of “Kelly’s Heroes” (1970).
  • The board cancelled its plans to host its first Tour de Norway Viking Film Festival with Clifton Chamber of
  • Commerce cancelling its “Tour de Norway” cycling event due to TxDOT’s work on Highway 219, making a tentative plan to reschedule in 2024.
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Wizard of Oz” (1939) as presented by Bryan Davis.

MAY

  • Bosque Film Society hosts the Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration free night at the movies featuring “The Mask of Zorro” (1998).
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Casablanca” (1942) as presented by Angela Smith.

JUNE

  • Bosque Film Society discussed the possibility of a special screening of Martin Scorsese’s new film “Killers of the Flower Moon” that might be nominated for an Academy Award this year, recognizing Clifton High School graduate Samuel French plays a role in the movie.
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “The Big Lebowski” (1998) as presented by Matt Wallace.

JULY

  • Bosque Film Society approves $1,000 granted toward film festival entry fees for “Voice of the Common Man: The Lomax Legacy” directed and produced by Brett Voss and William Godby.
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Gone With The Wind” (1939) as presented by Bryan Davis.
  • Bosque Film Society hosts the Second Annual Wild Western Weekend Free Film Festival featuring six free-to-the-public classic westerns over four days July 27-30 by presenting “True Grit” (1969), “Once Upon A Time In The West” (1968), “Silverado” (1985), “Jeremiah Johnson” (1972), “Rango” (2011), and “The Magnificent Seven” (1960)

AUGUST

  • Bosque Film Society announces that through member online voting, the classic Judy Garland Christmas musical “Meet Me In St. Louis” (1944) was selected as the feature for the 4th Annual Christmas Party in Decmber.
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Amadeus” (1984) as presented by Kaye Callaway.

SEPTEMBER

  • In conjunction with the Bosque Arts Center’s Culinary Club, Bosque Film Society hosted a film night featuring the Danish comedy romance “Babette’s Feast” (1987) sponsored by Simone & Brett Voss with Southern Cross Creative
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962) as presented by Simone Voss.

OCTOBER

  • Bosque Film Society, in conjunction with The Cliftex Theatre, hosted a special Red Carpet screening of Martin Scorsese’s western crime film “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023) introduced by Brett Voss with actor Samuel French as the special guest participating in a Q&A conducted by Matt Wallace.
  • Bosque Film Society received donations of two massive collections of original movie posters from family members of previous Cliftex owners Leon Smith (1990-2010) and Scott & Luann Sandahl (1972-1990) with initial discussions on how to use the posters as a fundraiser.
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Rocky Horror Picture Show” (1975) as presented by Philip Vasquez.

NOVEMBER

  • Sponsored by Brett & Simone Voss of Southern Cross Creative, the Bosque Film Society hosted a special 50th Anniversary screening of George Lucas’ “American Graffiti” (1973) starring Ron Howard, Harrison Ford, Paul Le Mat, Richard Dreyfuss, Charles Martin Smith and Cindy Williams. The event included the Theatrical Premiere of “Voice of the Common Man: The Lomax Legacy” directed and produced by Brett Voss and William Godby.
  • Bosque Film Society hosted the 2nd Annual Best of the Fest Showcase in conjunction with the 5th Annual Billy The Kid Film Festival held in Hico featured high quality short films with a diversity of forms and genres. The Red Carpet filmmakers event was attended by a near-capacity crowd in The Cliftex Theatre featuring a Q&A with filmmakers from across Texas, out of state and from Mexico.
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Stagecoach” (1939) as presented by Brett Voss.

  • Led by Angela Smith, Bosque Film Society began discussing cross promoting the Smithsonian’s “Crossroads: Change in Rural America” exhibit coming to Clifton in October, possibly producing a short film to promote the exhibit at The Cliftex. Smith also suggested BFS create a short promotional film about Clifton to show locally and abroad.

MARCH

  • Bosque Film Society discussed approaching the Austin Film Society regarding a possible collaboration on presenting “Tonkawa: They All Stay Together” following the life of the Tonkawa Tribe over two years as they work to firmly secure their independence and prowess as a first nation in modern society directed by Andrew C Richey and “The Man In The Big Hat” honoring the pioneering artist, songwriter, activist, actor, rancher, river guide and Poet Laureate Steven Fromholz directed by Austin Sayre.
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “The General” (1926) as presented by Brett Voss

APRIL

  • Bosque Film Society received a donation from the Bosque Arts Center of “The Face of Cinema: The Evolution of Movie Posters” exhibit originally from the W.K. Gordon Museum in Mingus, Texas. Simone Voss is in the process of cataloging the posters in the exhibit along with the Sandahl Family Collection and the Leon Smith Collection, estimating that the Bosque Film Society movie poster collection has grown to well over 1,000 originals.
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “The Great Escape” (1963) as presented by Nathan Diebenow

MAY

  • Due to the Tour de Norway cycling race being cancelled with flood damage and continued road work along the possible courses, the Bosque Film Society postponed the first Tour de Norway Viking Weekend planned for May 16-19 featuring “Breaking Away” (1979), “The Flying Scotsman” (2006), “American Flyers” (1985), “How To Train Your Dragon” (2010), “The Long Ships” (1963) and “The Vikings” (1958) until 2025.
  • Bosque Film Society hosts the Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration free night at the movies featuring “Coco” (2010).
  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “Double Indemnity” (1944) as presented by Bryan Davis

JUNE

  • As the Bosque Film Society’s second short film production, directors and producers Brett Voss and William Godby announced that “Voice of the Common Man: The Lomax Legacy” concluded its year-long world-wide film festival tour with the 26-minunte documentary selected to 29 film festivals internationally, nationally and in Texas, nominated for Best Documentary Short 23 times, winning the award 12 times, while Godby won best editor four times, while Voss selected as best writer three times and best director once.

JULY

  • The Society held its monthly members-only Film Appreciation Night featuring “The African Queen” (1951) as presented by Kaye Callaway
  • Bosque Film Society hosts the Third Annual Wild Western Weekend Free Film Festival featuring six free-to-the-public classic westerns over four days July 25-28 by presenting “The Treasure of Sierra Madre” (1948), “High Noon” (1952), “Tombstone” (1993), “Old Yeller” (1954), “Dances With Wolves” (1990), and “The Good, the Bad & the Ugly” (1966).
